Many developers
Pause in front of this sentence
While contemplating branding.
"I am a ○○ developer."
This sentence may seem simple
But it is surprisingly difficult to write until the end.
So most people end up like this.
- "I am a full-stack developer."
- "I am a Rails developer."
- "I am a backend-focused developer."
These statements are not wrong.
But these sentences
are not remembered by anyone for long.
Defining oneself with technology,
Only remembered as long as the technology lasts
The phrase "Rails developer"
Is accurate but too broad.
- Many people use Rails
- There is no distinguishing factor within it
- In the end, only the 'technology stack' remains
The problem lies in the fact that
The lifespan of a technology stack is
Shorter than one might think.
Frameworks change,
Trends come and go,
AI rapidly reduces technological gaps.
A developer who defines themselves by technology
Becomes ordinary
When the technology becomes ordinary.
What people remember
Is not "what you use"
But "when entrusted with what problem, can you be trusted"
This is how we actually remember people.
- "This person has built a service from start to finish alone."
- "This person explains complex things simply."
- "This person always thinks about maintenance first."
- "This person has clear criteria for technology selection."
This is not about technology but perspective.
And perspectives
Last much longer.
Therefore, what is important in branding
Is not "what you can do"
But "can you be trusted with what problem."
Saying "I am a ○○ developer"
Is not a title but a declaration of perspective
This sentence
Is not a self-introduction.
It is closer to a worldview declaration.
For example.
- "Full-stack developer"
"A developer who takes full responsibility for a service from start to finish alone"
"Rails developer"
"A developer who quickly shapes business requirements"
"Backend developer"
"A developer who does not lose judgment in emergency situations"
What is important here
Is not how cool it sounds.
It's about showing in what situations this person is strong.
The real reason why it's difficult to write this sentence
The main reason why most people can't write this sentence to the end
Is usually one thing.
"Is it okay to say this?"
- Worried it might sound too grandiose
- Feeling like they are not qualified yet
- Worried about what happens if things change later
But in branding, this sentence
Is not a certification.
It is a declaration at the present moment.
And one important fact.
This sentence
Is not written when it's perfect
It is written and completed by walking towards it.
Good definitions have something in common
A well-functioning definition
Satisfies the following three criteria.
It is specific
→ Shows in what situations one is strongCriteria for judgment are revealed
→ Shows what is considered importantCan be repeated
→ Appears consistently in writing, speech, and choices
If it satisfies these three criteria
That sentence
Becomes the core of your brand.
Right now, let's try writing it like this
There is no correct answer.
But there is a starting point.
Answer this question.
- In what situations have I had the most concerns
- What criteria did I use when making decisions at that time
- What questions do people often ask me
And write it down in one sentence like this.
"I am a __________ developer."
It's okay if it feels awkward.
Even if it's a temporary version for now.
The important thing is
That this sentence will become the record and criterion for your future.
In the next post
In the next post
We will discuss
How to reveal this defined identity through writing and documentation.
Not the finished product,
But why the process of incompleteness and contemplation
Makes for a stronger branding.
Let's continue in the next post.
